Managing forest carbon and landscape capacities

چکیده

Abstract Widespread impacts of a warming planet are fuelling climate change mitigation efforts world-wide. Decision makers turning to forests, the largest terrestrial primary producer, as nature-based contribution efforts. Resource-based economies, however, have yet include carbon (C) in their resource planning, slowing implementation these important measures for atmospheric greenhouse gas reduction. The realisation forest potential depends greatly on our ability integrate C-sequestration practices management applications. This requires robust C-estimates, an understanding natural specific landscape sequester C, current state relative this potential, and evaluation tool C midst all other values forests offer humans. Discrepancies between models used decisions estimation first hurdle impeding application forest-based strategies. Here, we combine disturbance with well-established model open-source simulation platform. We then use modelling system produce estimates C-holding capacity (potential) two scenarios study area BC, Canada. Our simulations provide essential metric if be managed C-sequestration: capacity. also point decreasing trend simulated over time bias C-levels compared (477 vs 405.5 MtC). explanations may avenue improved C-state estimates. framework information needed solutions using mitigation. is step towards systems that can unify scientifically based informed C-management.

Managing a boreal forest landscape for providing timber, storing and sequestering carbon

Human well-being highly depends on ecosystem services and this dependence is expected to increase in the future with increasing population and economic growth. Studies that investigate trade-offs between ecosystem services are urgently needed for informing policy-makers. We examine the trade-offs between a provisioning (revenues from timber selling) and regulating (carbon storage and sequestrat...

The Terrestrial Carbon Cycle: Managing Forest Ecosystems

The accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere due to fossil fuel use, deforestation and other anthropogenic sources is changing the global climate (Harries et al. 2001; IPCC 2002). Current understanding of the global carbon cycle suggests that managing forests and agricultural lands to increase the sequestration of greenhouse gases (GHG) provide credible policy options (Dixon and Turner 1991, Winju...

Total carbon accumulation in a tropical forest landscape

BACKGROUND Regrowing tropical forests worldwide sequester important amounts of carbon and restore part of the C emissions emitted by deforestation. However, there are large uncertainties concerning the rates of carbon accumulation after the abandonment of agricultural and pasture land. We report here accumulation of total carbon stocks (TCS) in a chronosequence of secondary forests at a mid-ele...

LANDIS and forest landscape models

This paper provides contextual documentation of the LANDIS model development to provide a framework for the other papers in this special issue. The LANDIS model of forest landscape disturbance and succession was developed since the early 1990s as a research and management tool that optimizes the possible landscape extent (100 s ha to 1000 s km2), while providing mechanistic detail adequate for ...

Forest Landscape in Europe: Pattern, Fragmentation and Connectivity Forest Landscape in Europe: Pattern, Fragmentation and Connectivity

The JRC demonstrated the feasibility to assess and report in a harmonized manner, forest landscape pattern and fragmentation in Europe, on the basis of an easily reproducible set of indices. Results were used in the Forest EUROPE, UN ECE and FAO joint ministerial reporting process on the protection of forests in Europe where data on forest pattern do not exist from national forest inventories. ...
